MVHS 1998 Baseball TeamHOF

The 1998 Baseball Team had a remarkable season, clinching the EBAL Championship with an 11-4 record.  They made history as the first and only North Coast Section Division 1 Champions with an impressive 23-5 overall record.  In a thrilling final game, they defeated James Logan High School 4-3.  Throughout the season, the team's strength was its pitching staff, led by Peter Dunkle, who boasted an outstanding ERA of .68.  Chris Buchanan, Mateo Miramontes, and Mike Kimball also contributed to a formidable team ERA of 1.14.

Offensively, first baseman Matt Crudale stood out, boasting 27 RBIs and a .403 batting average. Mike Kimball followed closely with a .366 average, complemented by the solid defense of shortstop Brent Cook and Jon Lee up the middle.  The team's success was also fueled by the senior classmen's leadership, notably captain Brian Vesce, whose commitment to a competitive winning mentality propelled them to victory in numerous close games, including three out of four NCS games won by a single run.

The 1998 team was well represented in the EBAL All-League Awards, with Peter Dunkle being named MVP.  First-team recognition went to Mike Kimball, Brent Cook, Matt Crudale, and John Engers, while Brian Vesce and Chris Buchanan earned second team.  Centerfielder Nick Jones and third baseman Dane Dobrinich received honorable mention recognition respectively.  The team's achievements were reflected in their #11 State Ranking.
